Ambulance from Murewa Collides with Land Rover at Busy Harare Intersection, Patient’s Condition Unknown

An ambulance transporting a patient from Murewa to Parirenyatwa Hospital collided with a Land Rover Discovery on Thursday morning at the intersection of Emmerson Mnangagwa Road and Glenara Avenue in Harare, eyewitnesses and police confirmed.

The crash occurred at around 9:30am at the busy junction in the Eastlea area.

The ambulance, believed to be from Murewa District Hospital, was traveling south along Emmerson Mnangagwa Road with its siren on, according to witnesses. The silver Land Rover Discovery was turning into Glenara Avenue when the two vehicles collided.

“The ambulance was coming fast with lights flashing. There was a loud bang. People rushed to help,” said Tapiwa Mudzimu, a vendor who operates near the intersection.

Witnesses said the ambulance had a patient, a nurse, and a driver on board.

The Land Rover had at least two occupants. The front of the ambulance and the driver’s side of the Land Rover were badly damaged.

City of Harare Fire Brigade and ZRP traffic police attended the scene. Paramedics transferred the patient to another ambulance that was called to the scene. The patient was then taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

The condition of the patient, the ambulance crew, and the Land Rover occupants has not been officially confirmed. ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police are investigating. “We are compiling details.

A full statement will be issued once we verify the facts,” he said Thursday afternoon.

The crash caused heavy traffic delays along Emmerson Mnangagwa Road and Glenara Avenue for over an hour as police cleared the scene.

The intersection is known for frequent accidents due to high traffic volumes and drivers failing to give way to emergency vehicles.

Under the Road Traffic Act, motorists are required to yield to ambulances and other emergency vehicles using sirens and flashing lights.

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is the main referral center for patients from Mashonaland East, including Murewa, which is about 90km northeast of Harare.

Police have urged witnesses to come forward to assist with investigations.
